Summary: This volume is the product of an international congress held at the University of Bamberg by the graduate school Generation Consciousness and Generation Conflict in Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The contributions look at how it was possible for charismatic sole rule to develop in ancient poleis and within the synodal structures of ecclesiastic communities, in spite of the fact that in principle they were based on the equality of all members.
