Many contemporary feminists believe that early humans worshipped a nurturing Mother Goddess, who was subsequently displaced by autocratic male deities. This book examines the maternal deities of various cultures and religions and finds no signs of a common origin, and thus no evidence for a primordial "Great Mother." Its conclusions stand in stark contradiction to the prevailing view.
