Summary: Why has science placed itself almost exclusively in the service of power? Can the rational avoid being appropriated by a kind of "hyperpower"? Do other possibilities exist for the future of thought? Dominique Janicaud addresses the menacing explosion of power in contemporary life. Starting with a critical reflection upon the origins of the rational, he combines a phenomenology of power with a genealogy of rationality to investigate the role of rationality in linking science and technology to power. Motivated by Heidegger's critique of technology, Janicaud broadens the interrogation by critically engaging with such thinkers as Weber, Habermas, and Adorno. The book sheds new light not only on Heidegger's own work but also on its relationship with the phenomenological past and its contemporary competitors - the Frankfurt school, post-structuralism, and contemporary analytic philosophy.
