A 1995 documentary directed by Sehjo Singh. A spirited woman's fight for the right to her land in the deserts of Bikaner, Rajasthan. When the waters of Indira Gandhi Canal came to Rajasthan, the ordinary gold of the deserts started turning green. All traditional land holdings were cancelled and a new dispensation took place. Sona Bai, a woman from the arid desserts of Bikaner, though illiterate, becomes the natural leader of the women in the protest against this dispensation. She has the confidence of dealing with the revenue officialdom, and even gives them a piece of her mind. This film by Sehjo Singh was a winner of Golden Conch. Born in 1963, Sehjo is an independent filmmaker working on issues of socio-political concern since 1987. Her most important work has been on land rights, on which she produced and directed three well known documentaries, which have not only travelled to film festivals all over the world and won various awards, they have also been screened widely in India and abroad. |
