The Burning Bed is a 1984 TV-movie adaptation written by Rose Leiman Goldemberg. On March 9, 1977, Francine Hughes, following thirteen years of physical domestic abuse at the hands of her husband. This film is based on the true story of Francine Hughes, a battered housewife who was prosecuted in 1977 for dousing her abusive husband with gasoline and setting him on fire as he slept. Francine Hughes marries her small-town high-school sweetheart Mickey only to discover his temper is short and his behavior violent. Urged to hang in there by her family and a broken social welfare system, she suffers continuous abuse, until desperation leads her to cross a threshold from which neither her nor her husband can ever return.
